Keys to Thriving during Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy drugs have multiple side effects. There are things you can do to help along the way:

Yes! Your hair will come out. Typically it's after the 2nd round.
- Cut your hair short to make the shedding less traumatic.
- Use a lint roller to pick up shedding hair
- As it sheds, cut down further or shave it bald. Shaving it takes the hair loss into your hands. You never know....your head might be super cute!
- Use conditioner to keep your head moisturized.
- You can rock the bald head, purchase a wig, wear hats, or tie scarves/turbans. Below is my playlist of how to tie turbans.
Infusion Day
- Consult your Oncologist, about Claritin use. Claritin helps diminish bone pain associated with chemo. Take one each day the week leading up to your infusion.
- Dress in layers and be sure to bring socks. The chemo bays are typically cold so pack a blanket as well.
- DRINK 8 bottles of water each day ESPECIALLY infusion day. This helps flush your system. Try to write the numbers on the top of the bottle to keep track.
- Pack your "chemo bag" with snacks, magazines, computer, headphones, etc. Everything to keep you entertained.
- Bring a cup of nugget ice to suck on during infusions. This helps you not get mouth sores. Also, sucking on lemon heads or any hard candy helps the taste in your mouth.
After Infusion Day
- Get up EVERY DAY and get dressed. If you still don't feel like moving, sit on the couch. The bed can be draining. GET UP!
- Drink LOTS of water!!! You don't like water? I bet you dislike cancer MORE. Be sure to drink liquids.
- You need to pee, poop, and sweat those toxins out.
- Keep a journal of how you feel everyday. Any changes you notice in your body.
- Eat plenty of protein and get your servings of fruits and veggies. Use plastic utensils, if you have a metallic taste in your mouth. Drink protein shakes if you don't feel like chewing. Nutrition is key!
- Exercise! If you are in a gym, wipe down all equipment BEFORE and after use. If you can't do much, a light stroll around your neighborhood is better than nothing.
- Feeling nauseous? Try ginger tea, ginger root, ginger gum, ginger ale....GINGER!! Also, if it's unbearable, call your Oncologist.
- Avoid using mouthwash with alcohol. If you have dry mouth, use biotin.

- They are your advocates! Tell them everything! Ask every question!
- You should be able to function in daily activities. If you can not, TELL THEM.
- If the chemo makes you nauseous, TELL THEM.
- Listen to your inner voice. You are not overreacting. Don't think you are imposing. Don't assume it's normal. ASK THEM QUESTIONS!
